Welcome to Chloe Harris' Blog

"Chloe Harris" really is the pseudonym for two writers, Noelle and Barbra, who've joined forces to write intriguing and sexy stories. A quintessential eccentric southerner, Noelle seems to find a story in almost everything. Ever ambitious to change her stars, she has a degree in Communications. Barbra lives together with her cat ('Princess Mimi'), who isn't very happy that she is spending so much time on writing. But this folly of the living can opener with opposable thumbs is mostly tolerated.

First Love

by Barbra

No, don’t worry, I won’t bother you with reminiscences of him. This post isn’t about good or bad first sex. It’s about those things that got our attention in the first place. I have a lot of first loves, but if I look at some of them now, I honestly can’t see what got me hooked back then.

My first love for books...
I remember what it smelled like. I opened my first book (well, not the ones with lots of pictures and nearly no text, I’m talking about the real one) when I was 7. Even today I sniff at a book before I start reading it. Weird, I know, but I can’t help it.

My first love for RPGs...
started pretty late, but when it did, it hit me like a meteor. I guess I was on the verge of getting truly addicted, but eventually age and what little wisdom I had accumulated until then won. For me today there’s nothing better than letting it all slip away for two hours after a hard day’s work by immersing in a completely different world. It's pretty much like reading a book.

My first love for writing...
That’s soooo long ago. I didn’t even know all the letters of the alphabet when I wrote my first story. It was about (don’t laugh!) a deeply misunderstood and therefore lonely and utterly miserable jellyfish on the quest to find true friends. 'Jellyfish' is ‘Qualle’ in German - and I hadn’t learned yet that something like the letter ‘Q’ (/kju/ in English, /kwe/ in German) exists, you see. So I spelled it like I pronounced it: ‘Kwalle’ (comparable to ‘tshellyfish’ in English). I totally misinterpreted my teacher’s constructive criticism. She pointed out that “something like this doesn’t exist” without any further explanation. As a consequence I thought that all teachers were dumb because they didn’t know about tshellyfish, so I kept writing those numerous other stories and hid them in my closet. And sometime later I swore I was going to be a better teacher because I know about tshellyfish.

My first love for teaching...
I was so nervous the whole day long I thought I was going to barf. I remember the first classes only in a blur if at all. Too soon routine set in. I may be ranting about it today, grumbling I’m sick and tired of it and that it’s just a means to earn money, but there’s more to it. Every time I walk into the classroom - my classroom - a wonderful energy immediately starts to buzz through my veins. You could compare it to be on the alert, yes, but it’s more. It’s invigorating and... heck, I just love it despite stating the opposite. The best part is the elating amazement and humbling pride I feel when someone uses a phrase or a grammatical construction correctly because I taught them. It’s highly addictive. It’s why I went into teaching adults. I didn’t get the same feeling with kids (they just got on my nerves because they didn’t know about tshellyfish) or adolescents (they bored me to death because they kept wondering if tshellyfish was a cool new drug they should try).

Do you have a first love story you’d like to share with me? I’d love to hear it.

I love your post today! It really made me smile.

I just posted on SBTB's thread "Harlequin Books That Hooked You" about the first time I loved a catagory romance. My post there is below:

It's only been just over a year since my category deflowerment. But once I read Emilie Rose's The Millionaires Indecent Proposal, Silhouette Desire #1804 June 2007 I was a true beleiver. I so admire writers that can produce such wonderful stuff in such a restrictive frame work. Not to mention do it over and over again.

Going into my first Category I was cautious and a little naive much like laid off accountant, Stacy Reeves. Thank goodness my first experience was sexy and oh so very satisfying. Kinda of like Franco Constantine, millionaire heir to a chocolate covered empire.

This book shattered all my misconceptions.

Cheesy titles aside that the author has no control over, I was wrong about everything else. And there was nothing choppy or simple about the writing. It was tight yes, but without losing any sense of the gorgeous setting or the deep emotions. Although the sex scenes were short they had great impact in those few words. The sexiest scene of all isn't even on the page. He mentions his plans for the night beforehand and she mentions it again briefly after the fact. I couldn't get the scene out of my head and technically it was only ever in my head. And there is no denying the vocabulary was rich and varied and the whole thing was intelligently written. Luckily me, my first time was magical.

I have a feeling though that all categories, like all men, are not created equal but there are ones that can rock your world.
