The Last American Man by Elizabeth Gilbert . The Author describes Eustace Conway as a American countercultural hero and a cross between Davy Crockett and Henry David Thoreau. The owner of 1000 acres of wilderness he lives off his own land and lives in a teepee. Although some of his views are a little primitive it's still a fascinating character study and the great basis for a hero.
Love and Louis XIV: The Women in the Life of the Sun King by Antonia Fraser. It's a well researched and easy to read look at the women in the life of one of the most fascinating kings in history. It's giving me lots of ideas for stories loosely based on history
