Welcome to Chloe Harris' Blog

"Chloe Harris" really is the pseudonym for two writers, Noelle and Barbra, who've joined forces to write intriguing and sexy stories. A quintessential eccentric southerner, Noelle seems to find a story in almost everything. Ever ambitious to change her stars, she has a degree in Communications. Barbra lives together with her cat ('Princess Mimi'), who isn't very happy that she is spending so much time on writing. But this folly of the living can opener with opposable thumbs is mostly tolerated.

If Everything Old is New Again is There Room for Something that's Really New?

I got a reader’s email today from Berkley Jove that honestly didn’t offer much hope for someone trying to break into the paranormal market.

There were offerings from well established Paranormal Authors – Angela Knight, Mary Janice Davidson, Laurrell K Hamilton etc; also plenty of new offerings from newer authors that would have been contracted more than a year ago. And let’s not forget – even if it’s not related to the Berkley email-- there is also the phenomenon of well known authors from other genres moving into the PR market – Nora Roberts, Teresa Medeiros etc.

But what really struck me about the books listed on the email were the reissues. You’re not only competing for a spot with all of the above, now there are paranormal offerings from 10 years ago or more coming back out in new incarnations.

Don’t get me wrong, both of the offerings from B.J. deserve a bigger audience than they got the first time when Paranormal Romance wasn’t as hot as it is now. The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley was way ahead of it’s time when I first read it oh those many years ago. And I cannot say enough about how happy I am that Susan Sizemore’s Laws of Blood series is getting the wide distribution and fabulous covers that it didn’t get released as fantasy by Ace way back when. If you haven’t read Laws of the Blood, do it! Its how Vampire fiction should be done!

But all this still leaves me wondering if there’s a place for a new author just now trying to sell paranormal?

Noelle
